What's in this guide

A plain-English overview of Google Tag Manager - what it is, how it works, when to use it, and how to set it up for the first time. Covers the core concepts (tags, triggers, variables, the data layer) without assuming prior technical knowledge.

GTM in one paragraph

Google Tag Manager is a tag management system - a single piece of code you install on your website that lets you add, edit, and remove other tracking codes (tags) without touching your website's code again. Instead of asking a developer to add the Meta Pixel, the GA4 tag, the LinkedIn Insight Tag, and a dozen other tracking scripts one by one, you add them all through GTM's interface. Faster, cleaner, and you stay in control.

The three concepts you need to understand before anything else

Tags are the tracking codes you want to fire - your GA4 event, your conversion pixel, your chat widget. Triggers are the conditions that cause a tag to fire - page load, button click, form submission, scroll depth. Variables are the dynamic values your tags and triggers use - the URL of the page, the text of a button, the value of a form field. Every tag needs a trigger. Most triggers use variables. That's the whole system.
