What's in this checklist

A systematic audit checklist for existing Google Tag Manager containers - checking for broken tags, redundant tags, misfiring triggers, orphaned variables, and bloat that slows down page load. Run this when taking over an account from another agency, diagnosing tracking issues, or preparing for a site migration.

The most common GTM container problems

Tags without triggers: tags that have been set up but are missing a trigger - they never fire and contribute nothing. Duplicate tags: the same tracking code added twice - often happens when a tag is added both via GTM and hardcoded in the site. Double-fires inflate data. Overly broad triggers: triggers set to fire on "All Pages" when they should only fire on specific pages or events. Outdated tags: old pixel versions, deprecated tracking codes, or tags for platforms the business no longer uses. Each unused tag adds page load overhead.

The audit sequence

Start with the Tags list - review each tag's firing status in the last 30 days. Any tag with zero fires is either broken or unnecessary. Then review triggers for specificity - are they as targeted as they should be? Then check Variables for unused entries. Finally, review the container's overall tag count: more than 30–40 tags in a container is a warning sign of accumulation without maintenance.
