What's in this guide

A setup and usage guide for Google Search Console - how to verify your property, submit a sitemap, read the performance report, interpret the coverage report, and use the URL Inspection tool. Covers the reports that matter most for small businesses trying to improve organic search visibility.

GSC vs. GA4: what each tool tells you

Google Search Console tells you what happens before the click - which searches your site appears in, what position you rank, and whether Google can access and index your pages. Google Analytics 4 tells you what happens after the click - what visitors do on your site, which pages they visit, and whether they convert. You need both. GSC without GA4 is like knowing how many people walk past your shop but not how many come in. GA4 without GSC is knowing how many come in but not knowing what attracted them.

The three alerts to set up immediately

In GSC, configure email notifications for: (1) Manual actions - if Google has penalised your site, you need to know immediately. (2) Security issues - malware or hacking notifications. (3) Coverage errors - significant drops in indexed pages often indicate a technical problem. These three notifications cover the most serious issues that can tank organic traffic overnight.
