What's in this checklist

A checklist for optimising web content for Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) - ensuring your pages are structured, cited, and written in ways that increase the likelihood of being referenced in AI-generated search answers (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity). A complement to traditional SEO, not a replacement for it.

What GEO actually means

Traditional SEO optimises for rankings in the blue links. GEO optimises for citations in AI-generated summaries. When Google's AI Overview answers a query, it draws on specific pages it considers authoritative and well-structured. Being cited in an AI Overview can drive significant traffic even if you're not ranking #1 for the term.

The sites that get cited most in AI answers share common characteristics: clear factual claims with specific numbers, structured content (headers, lists, definitions), original research or first-hand expertise, and authoritative backlinks. These are also good SEO practices - GEO and SEO have significant overlap.
